We recently celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary!

Even though we had our wedding ceremony in August 2013, we were actually legally wed on January 15th back home on Oahu. Almost a year later, we went to Venice and Milan for our honeymoon. I was four months pregnant with Coral. After dating many assholes in the past, it was easy to see how special this man was to me and forever will be. We come from countries apart, but hold values dear to our hearts. Respect, honesty, loyalty, and unconditional love are the very things that keep us and our family together.  Cheers to five years of marriage (and many more)!

I always have a difficult time finding the perfect wedding anniversary gift for him because the things he likes aren’t exactly romantic or have the potential to represent any sentimental value. He likes knives. He has so many of them already. So I scoured the internet weeks in advance only to finally settle upon a traditional gift of something made of wood, this beautifully handcrafted koa pen from Martin and MacArthur. I had purchased it with only seven days remaining until our anniversary date in hopes it would arrive on time with Priority Mail from HI. Every single time I checked the tracking information, it seemed as if the package was in a state of limbo with the same status for days. I began to grow frustrated because he had already purchased my gifts and we held off on opening them until his arrived. Not to mention, USPS has misplaced our packages in the past with a neighbor – the same neighbor, on multiple occasions.

So, when his package finally arrived, I wrapped it in the bedroom and we opened our gifts after dinner. The koa pen writes very smoothly and has a nice weight to it. It feels sturdy in your hand and even came with a beautiful case. Coral quickly claimed it as her own that night and even insisted on putting it on the nightstand at her bedside.

As for my gifts, I was ecstatic to receive a glimmering aquamarine heart pendant with a 14kt gold necklace by Peora Jewelry and a pair of Tory Burch “Miller” sandals in Vintage Vanchetta Leather (brown). I cannot wait to wear these babies as soon as the weather warms up in Cali.

We decided from now on, we’re going to make up our own traditions for wedding gifts instead of following some of the typical unfavorable ones you have to Google each year. Especially since what was “modern” then, may be well outdated in this millennium. I’ve compiled a twist on the modern list to be shown in my next post.
